BACKGROUND

Many schools of Tai Chi Chuan have evolved
since the early days of the founding Taoist
monks. ZENON WUDANG TAI CHI CHUAN
(as practised in Tai Chi UK classes) is based
on the Wu style, the founder of which was Wu
Quan Yu(1822-1902),a military officer who,
after learning the harder elements of Tai Chi,
pleaded with the Taoist monks to endow him
with the full teachings of Tai Chi and Taoist
philosophy.

Sifu Mike Jacques

The Monks acceded to his request and taught him. Wu Quan
Yu was succeeded by Cheng Wing Kwong who in turn taught
the immediate great grandmaster of our school, ChengTin
Hung, who in 1957 won the Taiwan Martial Arts Middleweight
Championship. He was also appointed by the Hong Kong
government to teach Tai Chi. Sifu Cheng taught the grand-
-master of our school, Sifu Dan Docherty, a former Hong Kong
Police Inspector, who won the 5th East Asian Martial Arts
Championship in Malaysia in 1980.

Dan Docherty is one of the chief instructors for the British
Council of Chinese Martial Arts (BCCMA) and has been
instrumental in the promotion of Tai Chi Chuan through his
classes, seminars, competitions and writing.

Jacques codified the teaching of Tai Chi creating a grading
syllabus to enable teachers to be assessed according to their

learning difficulties and disabilities.

At Tai Chi UK, we believe that a competent instructor/therapist
should have a wide range of skills so as to leave the customer
feeling relaxed, fulfilled and happy after each session. To
achieve this, an instructor/therapist must have good counselling
skills, know breathing techniques and have touch therapy skills.

To maintain this high standard of professionalism our
instructors and therapists are required to attend teacher
training seminars 4 times a year as part of the process of
renewing their teaching licence.
